During feeding time in her yard, Helen Popham, a caretaker of community cats, brought out some food for the feral cats that had made her yard their home, including a striking new addition – a large tomcat named Ricky.
Ricky, a tabby cat, had a unique appearance with cheeks that resembled a mix between a raccoon and a bobcat. Helen was surprised when she first saw him through her camera, as he was a shy cat covered in scars from battles.
After reaching out to her local Cats Protection organization, Helen discovered that Ricky had been wandering the neighborhood for a few years, scavenging for food and a place to stay.

Helen Popham shared with Love Meow that when they discovered the stray cat was constantly getting injured, they made it their goal to tame him. With each visit, Ricky, who had a big appetite, grew more at ease around the person feeding him. He eagerly grabbed the food from Helen’s hand as if he was fighting for it, eating every last bite and licking the bowl clean.

At the beginning, he was quite jumpy and anxious. Helen attempted to reach out and pet him gently, but he quickly rejected her with a fierce hiss.

“One day, he showed up at our doorstep with a noticeable abscess from a recent bite. It was clear he needed immediate medical attention. As he grew weaker, we managed to catch him and get him the vet care he needed.”

Ricky was provided with a tranquil and cozy sanctuary in the garage to heal. “We were unsure of how he would react. To our amazement, he adapted swiftly and showed signs of progress every day.”
The newfound sense of ease and safety gradually chipped away at his defenses. Ricky, it turned out, had a soft side beneath his tough exterior.

Ricky’s demeanor started to change as he began to bond with his caregivers. Thanks to the good care he received, his injuries healed, he became more energetic, and he developed a healthy appetite. Slowly but surely, he started to trust Helen and even allowed her to pet him on the head, although he still had his moments of being a bit skittish.

As Ricky began to understand that the kitchen was where his meals came from, he bravely ventured inside the house for the first time.

He began to venture around the house, enjoying the new exploration. Returning to the garage after each adventure, he relaxed on his comfortable hay bale bed, preparing himself for more indoor escapades. Over time, his boldness increased, seeking out affection and happily surrendering to grooming sessions. His time inside the house extended, eventually reaching a point where he had no desire to leave.

After caring for Ricky outdoors for approximately four months, Helen Popham and her family welcomed him into their home. As soon as he moved inside, Ricky’s trust in them blossomed even further. In just a couple of weeks, he began seeking out affectionate pats and became increasingly loving. Now, Ricky is no longer a stray; he is a cherished member of the Popham family.

Helen Popham shared that after getting Ricky neutered and microchipped, things went smoothly. The vet was surprised by how content Ricky was to stay inside with them, especially considering his previously wild nature. Ricky quickly took a liking to catnip toys, eagerly grabbing one with his paws and blissfully rubbing it against his face until he fell asleep in pure joy.

Ricky experienced his inaugural Christmas celebration with the family and made sure to dress his best for the occasion. During a recent exploration of Helen’s room, Ricky stumbled upon the bed and immediately claimed it as his new go-to spot for napping.

His latest go-to spot for a catnap is snuggled up on his mom’s cozy bed. Helen Popham’s furry friend adores following his family members from room to room, keeping an eye on their activities, and catching some shuteye right by their side. He particularly relishes belly rubs and kneads the softest biscuits, basking in the affection he receives.
